Her research explores how individuals use social media platform features to digitally regulate their emotional responses to subjectively harmful content. While working on her DPhil, Claudine was a researcher in the privacy-enhancing technologies group at the Open Data Institute. She also co-created Proving the Negative, a 13-episode podcast series translating cyber security and tech policy research accessible to a general audience. LinkedIn Julia Sepúlveda Research Assistant Julia Sepúlveda is a Research Assistant, working with Scott Hale, researching what type of digital good people want when using GenAI on private messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram. She holds an MA in Communication, Media, and Creative Industries and a BA in Humanities and Social Sciences from Sciences Po Paris, as well as an MSc in Data Science (Social Analytics) from the University of Manchester. Her perspectives are informed by Latin American philosophy, queer studies and mad studies. As part of the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience Scheme, she is participating in a research project with Helen Kennedy and Ros Williams about perceptions of what makes a ‘good’ digital society and the influence of demographics on responses to this question. LinkedIn Susan M Oman Senior Researcher Senior Lecturer in Data, AI and Society at The University of Sheffield; DCMS Policy Fellow Susan is Senior Lecturer in Data, AI and Society and AI & In/equality Lead for the Centre of Machine Intelligence at The University of Sheffield. She recently completed her two-year secondment as AHRC Policy/Research Fellow in Digital and International Cultures in the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Susan’s research investigates AI, data, evidence, policy and practice – and how they work for the publics they ostensibly serve. Her innovative arts and humanities research approaches of ‘following the data’ and ‘re-performance’ reveal the hidden workings of the social and data sciences to reveal the impacts of structural inequalities and foreground equitable possibilities in policy solutions. These approaches also provide a narrative device to communicate complex ideas and systems to diverse publics. Her monograph Understanding Well-being Data: Improving Social and Cultural Policy Practice and Research is available as an open access PDF from the publisher.
