‘The Good in Digital Good’: an off-key note session of the Digital Good Network Summer School 2024

In dialogue, Ben Collier, Violet Owen, Alex Taylor and Ros Williams invited questions on the good in digital good; and engaged the audience, making room for an expansive orientation to research and practice on the Digital Good.

Contributors

Ben Collier is a Lecturer in Digital Methods at the University of Edinburgh. Ben’s research studies how digital infrastructures become sites for emerging forms of harm, crime, control and resistance, drawing on approaches from Science and Technology Studies and Criminology.

Violet Owen is a Senior Research Associate for the EPSRC Fixing the Future: The Right-to-Repair and Equal IoT project. Her current research is exploring how Serious Games can be used to encourage social transitions towards cultures of smart technology repair. Violet is also a Postgraduate Researcher at ImaginationLancaster. Her doctoral research focuses on Creative Evaluation approaches, and how these can be used to establish the social impact of Social Innovations. 

Alex Taylor is a Reader in Design Informatics, at University of Edinburgh. With a fascination for the entanglements between social life and machines, his research ranges from empirical studies of technology in everyday life to speculative design interventions. He draws on feminist technoscience to ask questions about the roles human-machine composites play in forms of knowing and being, and how they open up possibilities for fundamental transformations in society.

Ros Williams is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Media and Society at the University of Sheffield. Their background is in science and technology studies, with research exploring the intersection between race, technology and health. Increasingly, Ros has been considering how, whether, and in what ways digital media technologies might be employed for creating more equitable health futures.
