What do we talk about when we talk about AI: can non-Western imaginations forge a model for AI paradigms that create digital good?
Marginalised populations in India are profoundly aware that digital paradigms shape and impact their lives in significant ways, but are completely disenfranchised to resist these top down mechanisms due to lack of access, knowledge, opportunity and solidarity.
Padmini Ray Murray’s fellowship will create a network embedded in south-south solidarities, bringing these marginalised communities from India into conversation with counterparts from other majority world countries in order to discuss and understand how their languages, mental models and cultural concepts shape their understandings of AI; to explore whether AI can indeed be considered a digital good if reimagined through non-Western paradigms; ultimately to manifest alternative, feminist, and anticolonial reimaginings of AI that might potentially create a model of AI as truly capable of doing “digital good.”
